Increasingly, organisations of many types struggle to cope with volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity.  Larger organisations develop strategies only to find that, while they do so, the world changes yet again. By the time a strategy reaches the workface it is no longer appropriate.

This is a workshop for people who wish to know how to lead organisations and teams in such an environment, and above all how to share that leadership with others.

Who?

Leaders who wish to improve their own and their team's resilience and responsiveness. And people who wish to help other leaders to do so:

  • executives  
  • team leaders at all levels of an organisation  
  • people in the 'people and culture' function of an organisation  
  • people in the 'organisation development' function of an organisation  
  • people in the 'learning and development' function of an organisation  
  • consultants and change agents  
  • anyone who wishes to understand and prepare for complexity.  

...  people whose work includes helping teams and groups to perform more effectively and enjoyably in turbulent times, and would like to become even more effective at it.

When is it?

Two days:   9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday 28 March 2019 (registration and coffee from 8:30 a.m.)  and 9 a.m. to about 4:00 p.m. Friday 29 March 2019.

Where?

Walkabout Creek conference centre, 60 Mt Nebo Road, The Gap.  Some satnavs give the suburb as Enoggera Reservoir.)

This is a beautiful bushland setting in Brisbane's western suburbs. There is parking on site, and public transport (The Gap Park & Ride bus terminal, bus route 385) about 800 metres away.

What?

Skills, concepts, processes and techniques for facilitative leadership, possibly including the following (as negotiated with participants)

  • understanding and diagnosing the need for facilitative leadership
     
  • judging when teams have the maturity and skills to benefit from facilitative leadership
     
  • developing team members to assume more leadership within the team
     
  • how to take a team on the journey from traditional teamwork to being ready to work in more flexible and responsive (and joyful) ways
     
  • becoming a custodian and curator of the team culture and climate to maintain and enhance the new ways of working
     
  • processes and techniques for redesigning the work of the team participatively, using such techniques as work redesign, role clarification, and role negotiation
     
  • collaborative approaches to performance management that share the responsibility for leadership and performance with team members
     
  • how to manage upwards, so that teams have the resources and support they need to perform at their best.

Action research and facilitative leadership principles and processes are used to fine tune the workshop as it progresses.

There will be opportunities to practise the processes, and plan for implementation within your own organisation and work.

How?

Participants will help to determine the process and content of the workshop.  Subject to this negotiation they can anticipate an involving process which provides a mix of theory, discussion and practice.  There will be pair and small group work to help participants consolidate the skills, techniques and concepts.

Participants may ask for pre-work to help them prepare for the workshop and obtain the most from it.

Facilitator?

The workshop facilitator is Bob Dick, a Brisbane-based educator, facilitator and consultant whose reputation in these fields is based on over four decades of consulting and facilitation experience in a variety of settings.

Those of you who are familiar with his work will know that his style is casual and participative, his processes robust and learnable, and his documentation clear, readable and practical.  His workshops are characterised by an integration of theory and practice, with equal emphasis on the development of skills and understanding.  The processes and models he helps others learn are those which he makes use of in his own work.

Fees?

The fee for the two days is $770.00 payable in advance, or $660.00 if received by 4 March, 2019.  All prices quoted are in Australian dollars and include GST.

Cancellations will result in a 90 per cent refund if received by 10 days before the workshop, and a 50 per cent refund if received by 2 days before the workshop.  Alternatively, participants who are unable to attend are welcome to substitute someone else.

A limited number of half-price bursaries may be available for those genuinely unable to pay the full fee, or other arrangements may be possible.  If you're interested, and the fees are an obstacle, we're keen to find a way of helping you to attend.  In addition, teams of three or more from a single organisation may qualify for a discount.  Contact us (07 3378 5365) for details or to discuss other possibilities.
